SUNSCREEN CREAMS: what chemical filters do to the skin

Why sunscreens with chemical filters should not be applied every day

Chemical filters

Prolonged exposure to Ultraviolet rays leads to premature aging of the skin or sailor skin now called “photoaging.” UV rays, highly charged with energy, damage both the elastic and collagen fibers of the skin causing early appearance of wrinkles and dark spots called sunspots.

Certain chemical compounds are able to absorb and dissipate this energy by preventing photo aging and are collectively called UV sunscreens. By using these creams every day, the UV sun filters, by performing their absorbing function, damage the skin.

From sunscreens creams to everyday cosmetics

In the last century, UV sunscreens were found only in sunscreens creams to be applied on beach stays or mountain trips so for a few days a year. In the 2000s, the idea spread that using sunscreen every day of the year would control aging from the sun’s rays.

Taking a cue from this idea, the cosmetics world, has been thinking of introducing chemical UV filters directly into daily-use skincare and makeup cosmetics (photo-protective make-up).

Is it a good idea?

In light of the latest medical research, probably not. The registered and allowed chemical UV filters are 28. Click here for source and further study, and to achieve protection e.g. 50, they must be included in large amounts in the final product, up to 25-30 %.

A recent study of the blood absorptions of sunscreens highlighted how they, after a single application over a large area of the body, reach peaks in the blood that exceed levels considered critical or dangerous chemicals. Click here for source and in-depth discussion

The European regulatory authority and the U.S. FDA

Over the years we have become aware of a serious oversight committed all these years: none of the filters allowed in cosmetics have been tested for systemic, that is, general whole-body toxicity. Click here for source and in-depth discussion

This “oversight” prompted the European and U.S. regulatory authorities, to require the submission of a dossier on the systemic toxicity of these chemical compounds. While waiting to learn whether or not the filters are toxic to our bodies, one can be careful and limit applications to the skin.
