MOST x IVO DE CARNERI FOUNDATION ONLUS: our commitment to social work

MOST firmly believes that social engagement is a very important contribution to the development of the younger generation. Supporting the growth and progress of those who have fewer opportunities has always been a highly relevant aspect of our activity. For these reasons MOST has decided to support the Ivo de Carneri Onlus Foundation by contributing to the development of several initiatives:

  • From 2019 MOST is committed to donating €1 for every order received on its e-commerce.
  • MOST is engaged in a project to supply Raw Materials to the Pemba Laboratory so that it can facilitate and speed up the processes of preparing compounds needed for skin care directly on site. Skin diseases and afflictions are extremely common problems in African populations. The danger of these diseases lies mainly in the consequences to which it can lead; the loss of skin integrity, in fact, exposes individuals to the risk of contracting life-threatening infections.
  • In 2023, the women of the Pemba community have decided to thank us and all customers who allow us to actively support the foundation by sending us handmade tote bags for which MOST has decided to donate €10 for every bag received. These bags will be free from March 27 until April 10 for every order received on our e-commerce while supplies last.

What does the foundation deal with?

The Ivo de Carneri Onlus Foundation was established in 1994 by the family, colleagues and students to remember Professor Ivo de Carneri and has as its primary goal to build a Public Health Laboratory on Pemba Island.
The Foundation promotes the fight against parasitic and infectious diseases in developing countries, supports research and training, and works for socio-economic development as essential factors in the health and progress of communities.

Why the island of Pemba?

Pemba Island is located in one of the areas most affected by parasitic and infectious diseases. In fact, in the 1980s, on this very island, the Italian Cooperation together with the World Health Organization had implemented a major intervention to control schistosomiasis, one of the leading causes of disease on the island. On that occasion, moreover, local personnel had been trained and international scientific contacts of great importance had been established that last to this day.

What are the foundation’s areas of focus?

Among the goals set by the United Nations in order to improve the world’s health conditions are:

  • Reduce infant mortality;
  • Fight AIDS, malaria and forgotten diseases
  • Make the benefits of new technologies available.

The Foundation has made these goals its own and with the various projects developed so far has worked with intensity and dedication to achieve them in the Pemba Island community.

One of the factors that contributes to hindering the development and growth of African countries is the phenomenon of “brain drain.” Training, both local communities and the professionals who wish to work alongside them, is one of the priorities of the Ivo de Carneri Onlus Foundation. The commitment is therefore aimed at health workers and professionals from both Pemba (Zanzibar) and the rest of the world, with the organization of courses, the awarding of scholarships and PhDs, and the possibility of training internships in collaboration with specialized schools and universities.

There can be no improvement in health conditions divorced from an improvement in socio-economic and environmental conditions. For the past few years, with its projects, the Foundation has been pursuing the goal of cooperation aimed at also fostering the development of the living standards of the people of Pemba Island with interventions aimed at enhancing the fundamentals of the local economy. Over the years, projects on sustainable agricultural development and food security, systematic water quality improvement and monitoring, and waste management education and awareness have been developed, among others.
