Maskne
The protective mask, PPE, for mouth and nose is a valuable safety device used to protect against viral infections.
In fact, in recent months it is the most widely used device against the spread of Covid-19 or Coronavirus.
They are made from a variety of materials, most commonly polyester, typically in the form of Non-Woven Fabric (NWF).
Once worn, the exchange between the warm, moist air from breathing and the outside air creates condensation resulting in increased moisture inside the mask itself.
Wearing a face mask for a long time, in addition to the discomfort caused by continuous rubbing, causes the skin in the mouth/nose area to adapt to the hot humid environment resulting in a change similar to what occurs in the diaper area in infants: initial maceration and change in the skin microbiota.
Side effects
Many people who use this safety device, especially in individuals who have to use it for long periods of time, experience a number of side effects:
- development of Acne, the so-called MASKNE
- dermatitis
- redness and itching
How to prevent and avoid irritation in prolonged mask use
MOST's solution
To prevent skin problems from prolonged mask use MOST suggests applying Soothing Cream before wearing it. This cream has mainly two actions:
- Absorbs excess moisture while keeping the skin dry.
- Protects skin from chafing by preventing damage.
The cream itself also serves to quench any inflammation from the mask thus allowing its regular use.
In addition, it is recommended to pull the mask away from the skin for a few seconds by lifting it from the underside. This allows rapid air exchange without compromising protection. Action to be repeated about every 10 minutes.
