Moisturising is one of the most important aspects of maintaining healthy, radiant and youthful skin. But how much confusion is there on the subject?
Drinking more water, using lots of cream, taking long showers… what looks “moisturising” is not always so. Skin hydration is a much more complex and subtle process: it concerns the skin’s ability to maintain and regulate water in its most superficial and deepest layers, to stay elastic, glowing and protected.
Here are some truths (and false myths) worth knowing.
1. Water… can be dehydrating!
It may sound paradoxical, but shower water, especially if it is hot and prolonged, can contribute to dehydration of the skin.
Water, in fact, dissolves and removes the natural lipids that form the skin’s protective hydrolipidic film, favouring moisture loss.
? prefer short showers with lukewarm water. And above all, apply moisturising products immediately afterwards to restore the skin barrier and retain water in the tissues.
2. Beware of irritants: no alcohol and perfumes
A frequent mistake is to think that more product equals more moisture. In reality, applying too much can clog pores and compromise the effectiveness of skincare.
? choose quality products and apply the right amount. Well-balanced formulas, rich in emollient and moisturising actives, really do make a difference.

3. Drinking lots of water is not enough
Drinking enough is obviously essential for general health, but it is not enough to ensure a glowing, moisturised skin.
As dermatologists explain, the water we drink improves blood flow and metabolic processes, but cannot be “directly sent” to the surface of the skin.
? moisturising the skin requires a mix of strategies: balanced diet, correct lifestyle and targeted skincare with topical products that improve skin hydration and prevent its evaporation.
4. Moisturising does not mean “spreading a lot of product”.
For healthy, moisturised skin, it is essential to avoid substances that can damage the skin barrier, such as alcohol and perfumes.
?prefer cosmetics formulated to be gentle and well tolerated.
5. Beware of irritants: no alcohol and perfumes
It is scientifically proven: dehydrated skin ages faster.
When the skin loses water:
- It loses elasticity: collagen and elastin weaken, increasing the risk of wrinkles and sagging.
- It becomes more sensitive: the skin barrier is damaged, exposing the skin to irritation and environmental stress.
- It regenerates more slowly: cell turnover slows down.
- It looks dull and opaque: the absence of water reduces the natural radiance of the skin.
? keeping the skin well moisturised not only improves its appearance, but slows down the signs of ageing.

The concept of self-hydration
In cases of extreme dryness, dermatitis, psoriasis or post-treatment, the skin may need more targeted support. This is where self-hydrating ointments come in. Ointments are anhydrous (water-free) formulations based on oily substances that form a protective barrier on the skin surface, ideal for retaining moisture and protecting dry or irritated skin. Creams, on the other hand, are lighter and more easily absorbed water-oil emulsions. Self-moisturising ointments make use of plant polymers capable of drawing water already present in the deeper layers of the skin and distributing it to the stratum corneum. Moreover, they do not penetrate the skin, do not occlude pores and do not generate blackheads.
MOST Skincare’s answer for self-hydration
Extreme Emollient Ointment: for very dry and dehydrated skin. Thanks to plant polyglycerins and other active ingredients such as Lauroyl Lysine and Kaolin, it retains water in the stratum corneum and improves skin elasticity, without being comedogenic or occlusive.
